Above and Below

As a teenager, I used to deliver groceries on a bike.

It was an old-school solid beast of a bike with a black box made of iron bars in the front. The size of the box was always slightly larger than a two four of beer.

A newbie could handle 2 cases on the bike but a skilled driver could easily carry 3 cases of beer in the iron basket.

Aside from the beer and smokes crowd, the rest of the regulars were old people who couldn't get out and about easily anymore so I would deliver the weekly groceries to them.

One elderly lady always got small orders and I would pass the items to her, one at a time, through a tiny window at the basement level.

Before you knew it, the summer was over and you haven't delivered groceries to the tiny window in over a month and you never will again.

That window is closed.
